Step-by-step guide to starting a chicken pickle business

Prior to starting a pickle business, you ought to follow the following steps. Following are the steps:

1. Which pickle to produce

In order to produce your own pickle, you need to select which taste you want to produce. Pickles come in many different flavors. There are sour pickles, sweet pickles, sweet and sour pickles, bitter pickles, and acerbic pickles. But chicken pickle is unique.

2. Manufacturing the pickles: Choose the infrastructure

A manufacturing infrastructure must be put in place before you can begin making pickles. Capital and equipment must also be in place before you start manufacturing large quantities of pickles. The process of making pickles can either be carried out at home, or a manufacturing unit can be established. However, you will need machinery to help you with the operation. Making pickles at home is a good option if you want to keep your production small. But if you want to start a larger manufacturing operation, you’ll need a separate facility.

In addition to utensils and pickle-making machines, you’ll need other equipment as well. However, compared to other businesses, a pickle business in India does require less equipment. The only equipment you might need to make the pickles at home is a vessel for mixing the ingredients, a marinating vessel, and jars or containers to store the pickles.

Manufacturing pickles on a large scale will require bigger machinery, such as a pickling machine, mixing machinery, and cutting machine. Furthermore, you’ll need containers large enough to store the pickles, as well as jars to package and deliver them to consumers.

3. Obtain the appropriate licenses and registrations

Pickle businesses require various licensing and registrations before they can be established. These are two of the most important prerequisites. Your pickles cannot be manufactured and sold on a large or medium scale without these registrations and licenses. The following are some of the most important licenses and registrations:

As the regulator and supervisor of food safety and quality in India, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, or FSSAI, is responsible for protecting and promoting the health and well-being of consumers. Under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Government of India functions as an independent body.

All businesses dealing with food or food products must obtain a license from the FSSAI. There is an FSSAI certification number required for every food package, which shows that it meets the quality requirements.

You may be required to apply for an FSSAI certification based on your turnover. For more information about whether you need the registration, you can consult the FSSAI checklist. This registration will specify all the protocols and standards to be followed when manufacturing the food items. In order to comply with these standards, strict adherence is required.

Shop Act

Before establishing a shop in any municipality, you must obtain licenses under the Shop Act. Wages, work hours, holiday requirements, terms of service, and other requirements and conditions for a shop are all regulated by this Act. A pickle store/business would also fall under this category.

Licensing is a mandatory requirement, and the license must be displayed prominently in the business establishment.

Other registration

In addition to these, you will be required to register for GST, Udyog Aadhar, PAN Cards, and business entities. Your pickle business will need to be registered under the Companies Act, 2013 if you intend to run it as a partnership or a company. You do not have to register under the Companies Act if you are going for a sole proprietorship. When registering for any of these services, you will also be required to provide valid proof of your address.

4. Storage and preservation

It is also important to have proper storage and preservation facilities. In order to make pickles, vegetables and other ingredients must be brined. The process of bringing involves storing vegetables and other raw foods in salted water for fermentation. As a result, they will be protected from fungal attacks and can be preserved for a longer period of time.

Storage and space are also required for the ingredients and pickles. You will have minimal storage needs if you are starting a business at home. In order to grow your business and serve more customers, you will need a dedicated storage facility for your raw materials and final product.

5. Managing your employees

Management of employees can make or break your business. This is also true for those who manage pickle businesses.

When you run a pickle business from home, you are the only worker, or you may hire a few others. You will need more employees if you are manufacturing on an industrial scale, including factory workers, supervisors, office staff, accountants, sales staff, etc.

6. Packaging and pricing the pickles

You need to pay attention to the packaging before you sell the pickles to the consumer. The packaged pickles can either be stored in plastic, glass, or any other material that can be used to store them. The packaging material you choose for your pickles will depend on your budget, transportation needs, and pickle-making style.

Pickle Pricing

Pricing your product appropriately is also important. Don’t overcharge or undercharge. A price that is too high will not be able to attract customers; a price that is too low will make people suspicious of the product. Market price should be around the price of your product. Depending on your branding, production cost, and distribution costs, it can be higher or lower.

7. Promotional tools

To attract more customers, you can use a variety of promotional tools. If you want more customers at the lowest price, you need to use these marketing tools efficiently. Advertisement, direct marketing, and sales promotion are traditional forms of marketing. This will be helpful if you want to reach the masses.

In order to maintain direct contact with customers, you just need to run a home-based business. It is important to build a website and create social media accounts to expand your reach. It is sufficient to use WhatsApp if you are running a home business.

8. Pickle business investment

If you intend to manufacture pickles on an industrial scale or to make pickles at home, the following investments will be needed.

  • Home business – Your initial investment should be around ₹10,000 in containers, jars, utensils, and ingredients.
  • Manufacturing business – The total cost will include the cost of machinery and labor.
